A New York City man who was not wearing a life jacket drowned over the weekend while tubing on the Delaware River, just south of Smithfield Beach, officials said Monday.
The drowning happened Saturday afternoon but the man had not been identified as of Monday afternoon, said Monroe County Coroner Tom Yanac Jr., who was waiting to meet with the victim’s wife.
Officials said the man, described as 51 years old, was with a group of people, none of whom were wearing life jackets, who were tubing on the river about six miles north of Delaware Water Gap when disaster struck.
The man’s friends brought him to the shore after he went under and tried to revive him with CPR. He was pronounced dead at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.
