HAWLEY — A bout of warm weather this winter has prompted changes to this year‘s Wally Ice Fest, which ends Sunday.

Organizers announced Wednesday that they would put safety first and switch to “plan B” in order to plan a fun weekend for participants making their way to Lake Wallenpaupack.

Wally Ice Fest originally had slated an amateur ice hockey tournament for Saturday and Sunday.

“We did everything in our power to pull off a great ice hockey tournament,” said tournament director Chris Becker. “However, we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature and unfortunately this year it has not been cold enough to have a safe amount of ice even at our new location.”

In lieu of the hockey tournament, the festival will feature competitive events at Watonka Outdoor Facilities in Hawley.

The two-day event being held this weekend will still include demonstrations from Anthracite Curling Club as well as live music Sunday, no matter what the weather forecast is.
