You don't have to spend a lot of dough to celebrate National Pizza Day on Sunday.

Whether you dine-in or opt for delivery, there are deals at both local and chain eateries.

The National Association of Pizza Operators says Americans eat three billion pizza pies yearly and pizzerias make up for 17% of restaurants in the U.S.

But out of all the food holidays, this one might be the cheesiest. Seriously.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in the last 25 years, cheese consumption has doubled due to high pizza consumption.

Mozzarella is the choice of cheese because it melts without burning better than any other cheese and has a special bubbling capability.

But pizza wouldn't be as delish without the dough. Thin-sliced, deep dish and gluten-free are some of the most popular options.

Top that!

While cheese slices are the norm for picky eaters, in a recent poll 63% of Pocono Record readers said they prefer their pies dressed with staples such as pepperoni, chicken, mushrooms, and olives.

Hungry yet?

On Sunday, Goombas Pizzeria (720 Main St., Stroudsburg, 570-424-1123) will be giving out a free "monster" slice from 1 to 3 p.m. in celebration of the holiday.

Owners Sam and Nicole Khamis sell one of the largest pizzas around a 26-inch pie, big enough for the whole family.

But if you want something hearty, take a bite of their biggest seller: the chicken bacon ranch pie or as the locals call it the "CBR."

They are also accepting pre-orders for heart-shaped pizzas just in time for Valentine's Day.
